The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
I’m a simple girl. I like things to be clear and if I’m totally honest, easy, too.
Recently while reading my Bible the first line of Proverbs 4:7 seemed to jump off the page in living color. Just eight words, but eight words filled with so much simplicity they’re nothing short of brilliant. So simple many of us stumble across the genius of actually applying what they say.
The beginning—the starting point of wisdom—is this: Get wisdom.
Seems like a “no duh” kind of thing until I remember all the times I’ve forged ahead without getting wisdom. Of all the decisions I’ve made (or not made), all the words I’ve spoken (or not spoken) and all the paths I’ve traveled (or not traveled) without it.
Most of us never intend to make unwise decisions. It’s just that taking the time, paying the price, or humbling ourselves to ask for guidance seems like a cost that’s easier to avoid.
It feels easier to wing it in so many ways—with our health, our parenting, our finances, our careers, our emotional well-being, our marriages, our spiritual growth–until we realize we’ve been circling the same rodeo one too many times.
A new year will do that to you—make you realize another year has passed and you’re still circling the same old issues.
Maybe it’s time to stop and go back to the starting point. Get wisdom.
I know I have a few areas of my life where I could use some good, solid, old-fashioned wisdom.
Yeah, I thought so.
Join me on a unique, three week Bible study called “Get Healthy”. It’s not a study about physical health (although it might help with that, too!) but rather, emotional, spiritual and relational health.
We did this last year at my home church and it was such a hit we’ve decided to start the new year with “Get Healthy Part Two”. Only this time I’m making the Bible Study and Videos available to you, even if you don’t live close enough to southern CA to join us live.
We’ll be discussing:
- Healthy Mind = Healthy Me
- When Distractions Become Detractions
- Changing Myself When I’d Really Rather Change My Circumstances
Best of all, we’ll be getting our wisdom from the best source available—God’s Word.
It will be practical. It will be real. It will be free.
And it will be filled with wisdom.
Which, I’ve decided, is something I need get more of this year. How about you?
